The Hand of Fatima, or the Khamsa is a palm shaped amulet that is popular throughout the Middle East and Africa and has recently become a fashion trend that has caught on around the world. It is being incorporated into almost everything nowadays including fashion, jewelry, wall-hangings, art prints, furniture, and accessories. As beautiful as it is, it’s real meaning is rarely referenced, and since I am in the region on vacation right now, I want to talk about it’s relevance.

The Hand of Fatima is a traditional symbol that is used to protect someone from the “evil eye” that is usually associated with jealousy or envy. Eyes are often used for protection because they are supposed to deter the person giving the evil eye from focusing on the real object. According to the legend, Fatima was the Muslim prophet Mohammed’s daughter and was often called upon for protection and compassion. The hand is the healing symbol and healing truth that represents Fatima’s loyalty and forbearance and is used to bring good luck to the owners.

The Hand of Fatima represents positivity, compassion, hope and protection. All the things I hope 2010 brings to you. So, Happy New Year and always remember to look ahead! Many people don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions, but I believe the point is a fresh new start or continuation to be positive and turn hopes into reality. So what are you hoping to do in 2010?

hey, lovely pics. One thing though, your a just giving the shops and boutiques where they can be found. this is fine. I just wished you had added the artist’s names. I think it faire to them. Unless this page intends to build up a potential clients list (if not why ask or the e-mail) or to advertise for those shops. any way this page is really a good Idea. thanks. (you can add the name of artist who khamsa picture 2 and 6. His name is Claude Feghali and is currently residing in Lebanon. He is a close friend and deserves to get credit for his work.(if you would like to answer, i had rather you reply on my facebook account: zeinanasri @ hotmail.com)
