The Hand of Fatima, or the Khamsa is a palm shaped amulet that is popular throughout the Middle East and Africa and has recently become a fashion trend that has caught on around the world. It is being incorporated into almost everything nowadays including fashion, jewelry, wall-hangings, art prints, furniture, and accessories. As beautiful as it is, it’s real meaning is rarely referenced, and since I am in the region on vacation right now, I want to talk about it’s relevance.

The Hand of Fatima is a traditional symbol that is used to protect someone from the “evil eye” that is usually associated with jealousy or envy. Eyes are often used for protection because they are supposed to deter the person giving the evil eye from focusing on the real object. According to the legend, Fatima was the Muslim prophet Mohammed’s daughter and was often called upon for protection and compassion. The hand is the healing symbol and healing truth that represents Fatima’s loyalty and forbearance and is used to bring good luck to the owners.
